1、The New College English Curriculum Requirements(2004:5)issued by the Ministry ofHigher Education clearly states:“As a systematic whole,College English has as its maincomponents knowledge and practical skills of the Engli
2、sh language,learning strategies andintercultural communication;it takes theories of foreign language teaching as its guide andincorporates different teaching models and approaches.”The New Requirements issues areal chall
3、enge to the present college English teachers.Currently,college English teachingstill sticks much to the traditional teaching method rather than placing the adequateemphasis on intercultural communication and its competen
4、ce development. Brembeck,all American foreign language teaching specialist,once pointed out,“…toknow another’S language and not his culture is a very good way to make a fluent fool ofoneselE”(quoted in Wang Zhenya,19
5、91:Moreover,the New Requirements also claimsthat the objective of College English in listening and speaking is not only developingstudents’ability to be able to exchange information effectively through both spoken andwri
6、tten channels,but at the same time enhancing their ability to improve their culturalquality SO as tO meet the needs of international exchanges as welL.Cultural conflicts areeasily caused by different cultural backgrounds
7、,as a result,knowing different culturalcustoms,life styles,thinking paRems,religious rituals,and non-verbal communication hasbecome indispensable parts in college English teaching. The present dissertation explores t
8、he relevant theories on intercultural communicationin an attempt to find out the positive factors contributing to oral English teaching in theChinese EFL context.In this study,a survey WaS first implemented among 220 non
9、—Englishmajor undergraduate students in Southern Yangtze University and the findings indicate thatthe students have limited command of cultural knowledge,low intercultural competence anda great desire for culture learnin
10、g.During the eighteen—week practice of interculturalintegration into oral English teaching,two English tests were given before and after thestudy.The results show that the applicmion of intercultural communicative theori
11、es iseffective in fostering the students’intercultural communicative competence and promotingstudents’spoken abilities as welL.At the end of the study,a group of interview with 20students was conducted to further explore
12、 the feasibility and effectiveness of this teachingreform.The feedback information indicates that students’cultural awareness,English studymotivation,enthusiasm ofclass involvement have been improved to a large extent.
13、 The dissertation clarifies the significance and indispensability of culture integrationinto college oral English teaching;applies some effective techniques aiming at developing anew teaching model for current college En
14、glish teaching reform and obtained somedesirable teaching results.It is hoped that the issues discussed through the process willattract further study among those who are interested in the same academic direction.Key Word
