1、Coherence and cohesion are two important concepts within the domain of textanalysis. They both attract great attention from text linguists, and much agreement hasbeen reached. But the relationship between coherence and c
2、ohesion is always a matterof dispute.Inspired by the Input Hypothesis, language learning needs the presence ofcomprehensible input. For ESL and EFL, input is in the form of text (written or oral).Coherent texts are a nec
3、essary ingredient of goodtextbooks. When learners reach theintermediate level of linguistic competence, they should be able to integrate individualsentences into a coherent text by cohesive devices. However, this aspect
4、ofcompetence has long been taken for granted.The present research investigates various facets of cohesive devices, awareness ofcohesive devices and the implications for language learning.First, a close examination of coh
5、erence, cohesion and cohesive devices is done. Itts observed that coherence is a design feature of text, a prerequisite for textcomprehension. There are many conditions contributing to coherence, and cohesion isone. The
6、paper argues that cohesion is a vital contributor to coherence, and a meansfor the realization of some other coherence factors. The mutual dependence ofcohesion and coherence is forther justified by the Economy Principle
7、 and EfficiencyPrinciple in cognition and linguistic representation, and the Principle of Relevance.Based on the above findings and the Marked Theory, the paper defines unmarkedcoherence and marked coherence in terms of
8、the presence and absence of cohesionrespectively. This study mainly deals with unmarked coherence, leaving the markedout of the present scope.Second, as coherent comprehensible input is essential to language leaming,qual
9、ity texts need coherence with cohesive devices. The pervasiveness of cohesivedevices is manifest in the texts in New College English. In this study, 84 collegestudents were chosen as sufbjects, and their output in writin
10、g was analyzed. Thisanalysis also indicates the pervasiveness of cohesive devices. And the correlation ofthe two kinds of pervasiveness proves the effectiveness of New College English indeveloping competence and performa
11、nce in cohesive devices. From the above study,an assumption is made about the possibility of cultivating learners' awareness throughexercises in order to promote the learning of cohesive devices.Finally, the findings and
12、 insights gained are incorporated into the context oflanguage teaching and learning wilh the aim to promote learning.The research comments on the treatment of cohesive devices and awareness ofcohesive devices in the pres
