3、alued in high schools. However, despite the fact that both teachers and students have made great efforts, the result is still far from satisfactory. Traditionally, reading is often regarded as a course for teaching pronu

4、nciation, grammar and vocabulary only. As a result, teachers focus on new words, language points and sentence structures, while students try to memorize them mechanically. Low reading ability and poor reading achievement

5、s promote us to ask what prevents students from making progress in reading. Based on basic reading theories, we deeply researched 102 senior two students in Ningbo by a questionnaire, an interview, observation and two t

6、ests. The 102 students were from two classes which had 51 students each. We did an experiment between the two classes. One class was named as control class which took traditional reading teaching. While another class was

7、 named as experimental class which took the new teaching mentioned above. And then we adopted some measures against the reading barriers. They were: stimulating reading motivation; cultivating good reading habits; enlarg

8、ing vocabulary; enriching background knowledge; grasping reading strategies; increasing reading speed; In order to prove the effectiveness of these measures, one pre-test, given before the experiment, showed no differenc

9、e between two groups. Within half a year's experiment, their performances were measured again separately. The scores were statistically analyzed by Excel 2000 and SPSS in computer. The results indicated obvious diffe

10、rence was gradually growing between two groups. The experiment presents that the measures we found out to overcome reading barriers were proved to be practical and valid. The findings of the study are of great significan
