3、linguistics is wider than other linguistic theories, which is mainly because the functional linguistic theory emphasizes a great deal on the study of the relationship between the linguistic system and the outside world.

4、The core of Halliday’s functional stylistics is to analyze language in terms of three metafunctions, i.e. the ideational, interpersonal and textual. A Rose for Emily is a famous short story of Faulkner, who is a major w

5、riter in American literature and an important representative of the Southern literature. A number of linguists have made literary critical analysis on the short story from different angles; however, there is no thorough

6、and complete analysis on it from functional stylistics. Therefore, applying functional stylistics into the stylistic analysis of the short story is necessary. The thesis begins with a generalization of the basic theorie

7、s of stylistics and functional stylistics. Then by applying Halliday's three metafunctions, the author makes a tentative research to the stylistic analysis of A Rose for Emily. The analysis is made from the perspecti

8、ves of transitivity system, mood and modality system, thematic structure and cohesion system, and then from the perspectives of the context of situation and the foregrounding theory. The ideational function analysis show

9、s that as the idol of the town people, though Emily refused to be the idol and fought for herself, she still couldn’t escape from her tragic life; the interpersonal function analysis shows that the interpersonal relation

10、ship between Emily and the town people was rather bad, and such terrible relationship was one of the reasons of Emily’s tragedy; the textual function analysis shows that unmarked theme is the major type in the short stor

11、y, and it also shows the cohesive feature. The foregrounding analysis of the short story focuses on the special writing techniques of Faulkner, especially the absence of the description of Emily’s mental process and the
