3、ope1.1ThistestmethodcoversthedeterminationoftheCalifniaBearingRatio(CBR)ofpavementsubgradesubbasebasecoursematerialsfromlabatycompactedspecimens.Thetestmethodisprimarilyintendedfbutnotlimitedtoevaluatingthestrengthofmate
4、rialshavingmaximumparticlesizelessthan3?4in.(19mm).1.2Whenmaterialshavingamaximumparticlesizegreaterthan3?4in.(19mm)aretobetestedthistestmethodprovidesfmodifyingthegradationofthematerialsothatthematerialusedftestsallpass
5、esthe3?4in.(19mm)sievewhilethetotalgravel(3in.(75mm)toplusNo.4(4.75mm))fractionremainsthesame.Whiletraditionallythismethodofspecimenpreparationhasbeenusedtoavoidtheerrinherentintestingmaterialscontaininglargeparticlesint
6、heCBRtestapparatusthemodifiedmaterialmayhavesignificantlydifferentstrengthpropertiesthantheiginalmaterial.Howeveralargeexperiencedatabasehasbeendevelopedusingthistestmethodfmaterialsfwhichthegradationhasbeenmodifiedsatis
7、factydesignmethodsareinusebasedontheresultsoftestsusingthisprocedure.1.3PastpracticehasshownthatCBRresultsfthosematerialshavingsubstantialpercentagesofparticlesretainedontheNo.4(4.75mm)sievearemevariablethanffinermateria
8、ls.ConsequentlymetrialsmayberequiredfthesematerialstoestablishareliableCBR.1.4ThistestmethodprovidesfthedeterminationoftheCBRofamaterialatoptimumwatercontentarangeofwatercontentfromaspecifiedcompactiontestaspecifieddryun
9、itweight.ThedryunitweightisusuallygivenasapercentageofmaximumdryunitweightdeterminedbyTestMethodsD698D1557.1.5TheclientrequestingthetestmayspecifythewatercontentrangeofwatercontentsthedryunitweightfwhichtheCBRisdesired.1
