1、<p> Big Data Assists in “Three Roles”</p><p> In the past one or two years, when the Internet developed at a fast pace, man-made data accounted for 90% of the total volume of data in the world. The b
2、ehemoth of data has brought business opportunities to traditional telecom operators as great as the influence upon them. It will bring forth the new market space and accelerate the transformation. </p><p>
3、In the approaching “big data age”, the information has become the strategic assets of enterprises and the market competition requires more and more data to be kept for a long while. For telecom operators, every day there
4、 is a large amount of valuable data generated from Internet channels, business platforms, supporting systems and so on. The commercial smart applications based on those data will provide a bigger market space for traditi
5、onal basic telecom services. </p><p> “In the information-oriented society, the big data is becoming one of the most attention-worthy things for enterprises,” said Wang Siwei, associate chief engineer of Ch
6、ina Telecom Shanghai in the 6th Shanghai Communication Development Annual Conference. The topic of this conference was “communication and big data”. This means that the telecom operators in China has prepared for the adv
7、ent of “big data age”. </p><p> China Telecom Shanghai believes that the development and use of big data is of great significance and will become a force of reforming. China Telecom put forward the goal of
8、transformation three years ago. It wants to become the dominator of smart channels, the supplier of comprehensive platform and the participator of content supply. The big data undoubtedly will have significant influence
9、over China Telecom’s transformation to the “new three roles”. </p><p> Challenges and Chances </p><p> Though the big data has brought great business opportunities to enterprises, Chinese tele
10、com operators, which are late in the research of related technologies, are behind the IT enterprises in the innovation. Wang Siwei said that the insufficient data collection, analysis and application left a huge mine of
11、data to be exploited. </p><p> According to experts, the challenges for operators come from the internal hardware and software, as well as the external relationship. </p><p> Presently, operat
12、ors still lack enough power in the data collection and importation. Actually, operators still prefer Internet quality and charge system to upgrading data centers when it comes to investment. </p><p> In the
13、 internal software, telecom operators, which are big state-owned enterprises, have a high-scattered regional distribution and business network. How to make different departments work together harmoniously is a problem. T
14、he big data usually requires coordinating various kinds of information for the sake of users. As for the external relationship, operators also need to define and evade users’ privacy. How to solve the problems of user
15、 safety and how to deal with the overwhelming IT enter</p><p> Generally speaking, operators simultaneously face the challenges and chances with latter taking a larger part. Operators are behind IT enterpri
16、ses in the technological research and usage. They are furiously speeding up to narrow the gap to avoid being turned into the only role as the channel. </p><p> Development of Big Data </p><p>
17、 China Telecom Shanghai is now engaged in the construction of big data projects and the development of big data-related business through data dig-up and opening. </p><p> Fu Zhiren, senior manager of China
18、Telecom Shanghai said in the 6th Shanghai Communication Development Annual Conference that the big data needs the transfer network to provide high-speed transfer services, as well the data center and cloud computing to p
19、rovide the storage and calculating of a huge volume of data. The value of operators’ big data comes from channels, and conversely, operators need a high-quality channel for the transfer and storage of big data. </p>
20、;<p> As for the infrastructure construction, China Telecom Shanghai pays more attention to the construction of facilities concerning data storage and data analysis, including the trust of IDC servers and cloud p
21、roducts. This provides necessary basic elements for the development of big data. </p><p> According to Fu Zhiren, China Telecom Shanghai has been committing itself to the development of big data through the
22、 infrastructure construction. The company has been actively promoting the projects of“MONET” and “Wireless City”. By January 2013, the fiber-optical network, the main subject of “MONET”, has already recruited 2.6 million
23、 users and been able to provide the broadband with average bandwidth of 16Mb. It is expected that the fiber-optical network will have 3.6 million users and 32M aver</p><p> In addition, China Telecom Shangh
24、ai has already built over 9,000 hotspots of WiFi connection, provided the best 3G network covering the whole city, and established a large number of data centers to lay a solid foundation for the data center distribution
25、 with four core points in four major regions of Shanghai. </p><p> As for the cloud computing, China Telecom is building an integrated solution with basic and applicationoriented products as the base for th
26、e comprehensive service model with sources, channels and terminals. It is known that China Telecom Shanghai is going to continue the implementation of “Cloud Sea Project” along with the construction of pilot city of c
27、loud computing. It will assemble foreign and domestic large Internet enterprises to build the cloud computing business model in the fields of</p><p> Big Data and “Three Roles” </p><p> China
28、Telecom hopes for the new three roles as the dominator of smart channels, supplier of comprehensive platform and the participator of contents supply. This goal fully shows its strategic appeal and enterprise positioning
29、in the big data age. </p><p> Fu Zhiren said that the goal of smart channels is to provide better network and business experiences for users. Operators can optimize the control of network resources and iden
30、tify users so as to provide differentiated services based on the user categories. </p><p> The comprehensive platform is where operators improve the statistical data of enterprises’ users and similar applic
31、ations through the opening of data collection, so as to provide more references for enterprises’ decisionmaking. </p><p> As a participator of content supply, operators can turn big data into products based
32、 on users’ status, positions, terminals and favors to provide information service for the society. </p><p> Many experts pointed out that the three roles require the ability of data dig-up and usage. The de
33、velopment of cloud computing technology increases the possibility of widely using the big data and enables the handling of a large amount of data timely and efficiently. But they still need to do more to really take this
34、 path. </p><p> In the 6th Shanghai Communication Annual Conference, Wang Siwei put forward the four contents concerning China Telecom’s construction of big data network. </p><p> Firstly, the
35、 information assets should be standardized. Secondly, the data should be revealed instead of being hidden in the Internet users ? a flexible platform is needed to collect and show the data. Thirdly, operators should buil
36、d an analysis platform based on demand, turning data into useful and valuable products. Lastly, the operating platform should be open, turning data into operative assets while enough safety measures are adopted for the r
