4、he design, development and management of logistics systems. Logistics activities include inventory management, warehousing operations, consolidation and packaging, transportation and logistics information systems (LIS).

5、Successful logistics operations not only enable rapid organizational market reach, with delivery of competitive products, but it may also reduce the total cost of these products while simultaneously improving customer sa

6、tisfaction.Logistics management studies have focused onoutsourcing, supplier development, managing inventory and other strategies for containing and reducing shipping cost. Alternatively, e-commerce logistics (ECL) and t

7、hird-party logistics (3PL) are adopted and designed for flexibility and responsiveness to dynamic market requirements. Many issues arise in the management of these organizational practices, for example, an interesting pr

8、oposition behind the ECL and Articles appearing in this special issue clearly identify problems associated with the integration of intra-enterprise information flows in a logistics value chain with the objective of impro

9、ving flexibility and responsiveness of organizations in e- markets. Innovative and high-quality conceptual, analytical models, empirical and case studies ad- dressing the issues of design and implementation of ECL and 3P

10、L or related issues are also apparent in this special issue. We now provide an overview of the various research investigations that appear in this special issue.3PL is currently attracting considerable research attention

11、, as is evident by this special issue. Despite the growing body of literature on this topic, precious little effort has been devoted to synthesizing the overall state of art in research on 3PL. In the paper, ‘‘Third-Part

12、y Logistics: A Literature Re- view’’, Marasco reviews the status of research and practitioner literature on 3PL. A literature review scheme is presented. A total of 152 articles published between 1989 and 2006 in 33 repu

13、table international journals are reviewed and classified into content- and methodology-related issues. Based on the review, suggestions for future research are provided. As the increasing growth of the Internet has chang

14、ed the way corporations conduct business, logistics service providers must consider changing their traditional logistics system into an electronic (e)-logistics system. The purpose of the second paper in the special issu

15、e, titled ‘‘Selection of the Strategic Alliance Partner in Logistics Value Chain’’, by Bu¨yu¨ko¨zkan, Feyziog?lu and Nebol is to provide decision support for careful assessment of e-logistics partners. Org

16、anizations are aware that they need to collaborate with their logistics partners in order to best serve their customers and achieve business excellence. However, the selection of a suitable partner for strategic alliance

17、s in the logistics value chain is not a trivial decision. It is associated with multiple dimensions of uncertainty and complexity. The objective of their research is to introduce a multi-criteria decision making approach

18、 to effectively evaluate e-logistics-based strategic alliance partners. Since these partner selection and evaluation decisions are replete with subjective considerations and dimensions, a fuzzy logic approach is adopted.
