2、oup there is a daily battle for survival, dignity, and basic human rights. Her struggle could include protection from human trafficking, sexual violence, and finding necessary health services, while adapting back into a

3、community and family that may be hostile. T he process of reintegration, as a girl returns to her original social commu- nity after being engaged in conflict, is a long and difficult journey. Today, girls return home and

4、 try to adapt to the political, legal, economic, and social conditions that were different before their involvement in the armed group. The systems to which they return are not adequately addressing the problems that the

5、se former child soldiers face. Girls as young as nine have been recruited or abducted into armed conflicts and spend months or years involved with armed groups. And in many cases, sexual assaults take place when they ret

6、urn to their community. These girls have fought in war, given birth to children, and done acts of violence against people. Now they return to society, where they are faced with isolation, stigmatization, and exclusion in

7、 addition to adapting to the trauma they have suffered during their involvement in the conflict. The social factor for many returning child soldiers is the most difficult to endure. The reintegration process in which the

8、 girl must go through is a social issue and understanding the social aspects help grasp insight into the difficulties in which girls face when returning to their cities, communities, and families. In cases where girl sol

9、diers have given birth during their time in an armed group, they are met with more animosity upon return. The stigma that is attached to girl soldiers and the culture in which they return can be hostile during the reinte

10、gration process and can cause devastating effects on the physiological healing of the child already traumatized by war. Many girls that have been taken or recruited during times of conflict are children that had limited

11、access to education and vocational possibilities. When girls return, their problems have been compounded by war and rival conflicts, making their future possibilities even more challenging to achieve.292294 JOY BROOKSThe

12、 document adopted in 2007 in Paris was standard for ninety-five states by 2010. The Paris Principles address the issue of girls, observing that they face much longer and more critical stigmatization within their communit

13、ies. There are instances in which children are forced to live outside of their families because they have born children out of rape through their captivity during the armed conflict. Another aspect is demobilization and

14、girls who self-demobilize; they are not always allowed into the reintegration process, if one is available. Other problems include the status girls are given upon return. Due to stereotypes, many girls are not classified

15、 child soldiers, and thus do not qualify for programs that might be offered. T he twenty-first century has addressed issues and standards that should be applied to children returning home during armed conflict. Yet, the

16、practical sides of these standards are not functioning properly for girls that are returning home. In the absence of a functioning reintegration system for girls they become more likely to be sexually exploited or enter

17、into prostitution as a means of survival. One of the main problems with the reintegration process is the stigma returning child soldiers often face. For girls returning home, the stigma is even stronger. Many times the c

18、ommunity will believe the girl has lost her “value” and is unable to marry, therefore the rejection and isolation for the girl is even more compounded during her reintegration. Although the United Nations and nongovernme

19、ntal organizations (NGOs) are trying to address the issue of girl soldiers, often they cannot access any services for a variety of reasons: short-term programs for rein- tegration are often provided when long-term soluti

20、ons are actually needed; funding is usually inadequate; political will is often lacking to adapt programs for reintegration; and girls might not be able to enter the programs that do exist. Many states have adapted the P

21、aris Principles, which address the is- sue of girls, stating that “pro-active measures must be taken to ensure the full involvement and inclusion of girls in all aspects of prevention of recruit- ment, release and reinte

22、gration, and services should always respond to their specific needs for protection and assistance.” It is essential that a sensitive approach is taken to identify and assist girls so as to not increase the stigma that of

23、ten afflicts girls returning home with children born out of the armed forces. Barriers within the reintegration system for girls include traditional fam- ily structures and community discrimination. A nation’s ability an

24、d desire to address the issue of girl soldiers and the capacity of NGOs to get funding for long-term programs are essential for the lives of the girls returning home. Without a successful reintegration system for girls i
