2、leIndiansbelievedthattheyweretheprimitiveinhabitantsinAmerica.TheylivedinnthofAmericapartofAlaskatheislofHawaii.Theylivedashuntergathersocietiestheyalwayshuntedthebisonftheirfood.Howeversincetheendof15thcenturythemigrati
3、onofEuropeanstoAmericaEuropeanstreatedIndiansastheirslaveskillednumerousIndiansbrutally.AsinfectedsmallpoxvirusbyEuropeansmillionsIndiansdied.OwingtotherequirementofdevelopingagriculturebuildingCommunitiesEuropeansdroveI
4、ndiansawaytheirlwhichtheyhadlivedthereseveralthousyearstothewest.Besidestheydidn’tallowotherimmigrantstothewest.IndianssufferedhighfatalitiesfromthecontactwithinfectionsEurasiandiseases.EpidemicafterEuropeancontactcaused
5、thegreatestlossoflifefindigenouspopulationrangingoftensofmilliontofewmillion.AfterthecoloniesrevoltedagainstGreatBritainestablishedtheUnitedStatesAmericangovernmentabolishedtherulethatimmigrantscouldn’tgotowestencouraged
6、peoplemovingsettlingtowest.Itwascalled‘westwardmovement’.IntheprocessofthemovementAmericanIndianssufferedbrutalmassacrebywhitepeople.Thewhitepeopleoccupiedtheirldrovethemtothereservations.Sowecansaythatthewestwardmovemen
7、tistheIndians’tragedy.AsthewdsaidthatalmoststreamsofpeoplewhomovedtowestweretreadedonIndians’bloodbones.InadditionthemovementledtothefinaldestructionofIndians’tribalsocietiestheirnomadicwayoflife.Despiteoccasionalvicties
8、Indianresistancewascrushed.Thetribeswerenotonlyoutgunned.Massslaughterledtothenearextinctionofthebuffaloherdsonwhichtheydepended.NotonlyhadIndianslosttheirlbutalsotheylosttheconfidenceofliving.NowadaystheremnantsofNative
9、Americansocietyaretobefoundonthereservations.Theystillarenotfreetheystillliveonthelonelyislpovertyinthestofavastoceanofmaterialprosperitytheyarestillsadlycrippledbythemanaclesofsegregationthechainsofdiscriminationtheyare
10、stilllanguishedinthecnersofAmericansocietyfoundthemselvesanexileintheirownl.Sincethedleof19centuryIndianshavestrugglefequalrightsopptunitiesofdevelopmenttheyhavewonaseriesoflegalpoliticalvicties.Thoserightsincludevotinge
11、lecting.Thefederalgovernmentrecognizedtribalsovereigntyexceptwherelimitedbytreatycongress.Butthestrengtheningofprincipleofself—determinationhadonlyalimitedimpactonthelivesofmostIndians.TodayIndianscanleavethereservationt
12、ofindjobpursuittheirdreamsbutwecanseethattheyaretreatedunfairlytheyaresuffereddiscrimination.Sotheystillinsisttofightneversaygiveup.Theltheytheirancestlivedonitthefertilelhadbroughtthemdeliciousfoodwarmclothesrichresourc
13、ebutnowtheyjustcanliveonthosebarrencnersevenaredrovebyoutsiders.WhatshouldtheydoKeepsilencestruggleffreedom.Absolutelytheychosethelaterone.Nofightingnofreedomnofightingnorights.ItistimefstrugglingIndiansaretryingtofindth
14、eirtomrowtheycanlivewithwhitepeopleshareequalrightstheirchildrencanstudywithwhitepeople’schildren.Theredoesn’texistdiscriminationallpeopleareequal.Howeverthedreamisdifficulttocometrueitneedsmeefftsblood.Itisanarduouswayt
15、heymustgo.FtunatelytheirefftsarenotinvaintheAmericangovernmenthadtakenmeasurestoeasethecontradiction.Fexamplethegovernmentdecidedtoearmarkfoundsabout45milliontoIndiansfcompensatingwhattheyhaddonetoIndians.HoweverIndianss
16、tillfacedsevereproblemsnamelyunemploymentpovertyeconomichardship.Someofthoselivingthereservationmadealivingbyoffergoodsdeveloptourismoperategamblingthatareprohibitedelsewhereunderstatelaw.ButsomewhitepeoplethinkthatIndia
17、nshavenotrighttoopencasinos.ItisunfairtoIndianstheyhaverighttochosewhattheywanttodounderthelaw.Americacallshimselfasademocraticequalrespecthumanrights’country.Butinfactwecanstillfindunequalthingsracialdiscriminationinit.
