2、ing critical attentions from his first novel, The Naked and the Dead, published in 1948 to the day he passed away in 2007.His public images have been regarded as the weatherglass for the big changes in American society,

3、and his works have also shown prompt and great concern with American society, culture and political life since the Second World War. However, the arts creativity in Mailer’s works has never been explored, and he has got

4、less attention in Chinese critical domain. Until now there have been no more than one hundred papers about him, of which most did the theme analysis to The Naked and the Dead, which brought him great popularity, from dif

5、ferent perspectives, while A New Historicist and Cultural Materialist Study of Norman Mailer’s Woks written by Gu Hongli is the only book on him. Mailer wrote a lot for nearly fifty years in his life. He had published ab

6、out 40 books in total, and his successful nonfictions brought him great achievements and honor. The Armies of the Night helped him win not only the 1969 Pulitzer Prize in general nonfiction but also the 1969 National Boo

7、k Award in arts and letters. After reading the nonfiction earnestly, I found that this text structure and new historicism interestingly share some important notions concerning the relationship between history and literat

8、ure. Based on some of the constructive research conducted by other scholars, this thesis aims to find out the connection between historicity and textuality by analyzing Norman Mailer’s popular nonfiction The Armies of th

9、e Night from the perspective of new historicism, furthermore to post the way that the theory is used in the text structure ， and in the end to reveal the significance to the development of contemporary literary criticism
