2、ential increase in its publication. With this critical mass firmly in place, Asian American drama continues to grow as a field. From the early stage of putting on translated or revised Chinese traditional drama in Americ
3、an, to the upsurge of the exotic Oriental theme during the 1950s to 1960s, and the final success of trending towards the main stream in the following two decades, Chinese American drama has accomplished its transformatio
4、n from self-naturalization to search for identity. And at the same time, some famous playwrights, Frank Chin and David Henry Hwang etc, make use of their literary practice as part of a strategic action to subvert the wes
5、tern hegemonic discourse with which the white racists impose prejudiced stereotypes on the Chinese Americans; and to subvert the traditional relations between the East and the West. Therefore, in reading the Chinese Ame
6、rican drama discourse, three ongoing issues of gender seem interwoven with each other, namely: the identity crisis of the Chinese American man, the politics of simultaneous articulations of gendered subjectivities; and g
7、ender transgression as a representational strategy in the deconstruction of Orientalist assumptions about East-West relationships. After a brief survey and analysis on Chinese American drama, this thesis, by using of the
8、ories of Post-colonism (with the Orientalism in particular) and Cultural Studies, has made a general account of the development and future tendency of Chinese American drama. And then, this paper, by the comparison with
9、the works written by two contemporary famous writers, Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan, also attempted to make an analysis on the creation style and the theme, especially the reconstruction of masculinity of Chinese Amer
10、ican man, of the plays written by two representative Chinese American dramatists: Frank Chin and David Henry Hwang. And on that basis, try to reveal the effect of these writers’ bi-cultural identity on their protagonists
11、 and the thinking of the Chinese American play in their discussion of the racial and ethnic problems. The whole thesis is made up of four chapters: the first chapter mainly gives a brief survey of Chinese American litera
