3、tract Lu Xun, with his short story “The Diary of a Madman” which is the first vernacular story in the history of Chinese literature marking a brand new beginning of Chinese literature, is regarded as the “chief commander
4、 of China’s cultural revolution” by Mao Zedong. Lu Xun is well worth reading not only because of the social significance of his works but also their artistic charm including their economy of expression and rich implicati
5、ons, for which he is called “a carpenter of words” by William Lyell. Until now, there are several translators who have translated a large volume of Lu Xun’s works, including Wang Chichen (1941), Yang Xianyi and his wife
6、 Gladys Yang (1960), William Lyell (1990) and Julia Lovell (2009). Roman Ingarden regards the literary work, the represented object as a schematization with various indeterminacies and many possibilities of potential. H
7、e believes that every literary work is actually incomplete and waiting for further supplementation and in terms of text, this supplementation can never be completed. Based on Roman Ingarden’s theory of indeterminacy, thi
8、s thesis attempts to make a comparative study of the strategies of handling the indeterminacies in Lu Xun’s nine short stories by the four above mentioned translators, including “A Madman's Diary”, “Storm in a Teacup
9、”, “My Old Home”, “The True Story of Ah Q”, “The New Year's Sacrifice”, “In the Wine Shop”, “Soap”, “The Misanthrope” and “The Divorce”. At present, among the scholars who have carried out studies on the translations
10、 of indeterminacies, some maintain that as long as the indeterminacies do harm to the aesthetic experience of the readers, which has been proved to be very common in practice, the indeterminacies should be concretized; w
11、hile the others believe that if translators concretize the indeterminacies, readers of the target language will be deprived of the happiness they would get from their own imagination and understanding, which finally lead
12、s to the loss and default of literary values. This thesis attempts to find out spots of different translations of indeterminacies in Lu Xun’s nine short stories and set up a micro parallel corpus and make a comparative s
