2、ICE OF LOCATION WITHIN CHINA ABSTRACT The development of Foreign Direct Investment inflow into China over the last two decades is a remarkable feature of the country’s impressive economic growth. Following Chinese l

3、eader Deng Xiaoping’s promotion for Foreign Direct Investment in the course of his speeches in southern coastal provinces in 1992, China’s inward Foreign Direct Investment surged in p articular in coastal p

4、rovinces, supported by the governmental open-door policy during the 1990s. China’s accession into the WTO in December 2001 further expands the country’s opportunities for foreign investment, and is thus expected to ha

5、ve a significant impact on China’s inward foreign investment in the coming years. This thesis analyzes determinants and implications of China’s success in attracting Foreign Direct Investment. Moreover, th

6、e study illustrates the decision-making procedure of a company concerning its locational choice for its investment within China. Based on a theoretical background provided in chapter 1, the sec

7、ond part portrays trends of investment inflows arising from Foreign Direct Investment during China’s economic transition since the late 1970s. Due to China’s early focus on the development of the easter

8、n coastal provinces, the allocation of foreign investment emerged as geographically unbalanced. Chapter 2 concludes with an elucidation of the uneven distribution of foreign direct investment from a subna

9、tional point of view. The third part of this study deals with China’s macroeconomic and political environment with an emphasis on the government’s open-door policy, undertaken in order to promote

10、foreign capital, knowledge, and high-technology transfer by foreign investors. Following an analysis of China’s automotive and banking industry in chapter 3, chapter 4 examines the determinants of the countr
