29、s one system that makes it possible for creators and users</p><p> to handle three-dimensional data on the Internet comparatively easily, and we</p><p> consider it very important that Web3D b
30、e applied to homepages. However, despite</p><p> its usefulness and importance, it has been very slow to catch on, since content creators need to undertake some study to use Web3D effectively. We have been
31、teaching VR in our classes for many years and as a result have accumulated a great number of Web3D works created by students, but now we need to make good use of all these Web3D works. To solve these problems,we are prop
32、osing and developing 3D blog technology, which makes it possible for creators and users to handle Web3D data easily.</p><p> Apart from our own previous research in this field , there has been very</p>
33、;<p> little additional study, that combines Web3D and blogging technology.</p><p> Although it is certainly possible to display and handle 3D objects on networks</p><p> by using Web3
34、D only, we can produce a 3D environment more easily with our proposed 3Dblog technology. Moreover, because 3Dblog makes it easy for users to share 3D common data and cooperate with each other, it becomes simple to produc
35、e edutainment contents. The result is that not only can 3Dblog participants create contents completely by themselves, but they can also enjoy the learning experience.</p><p> As an experiment to evaluate 3D
36、 blog, we have produced a virtual-reality</p><p> system featuring the Pan Pacific Exposition held in Japan in the Showa period. The results revealed that 3Dblog includes a number of good features.</p>
37、;<p> The purpose of this study is to propose, develop, and improve 3Dblog technology,with the aim of providing a superior developing environment, makingit possible to reuse and create Web3D works effectively for
38、 all users whether professional or amateur, creator or spectator .</p><p> 2 3Dblog Technology </p><p> 2.1 A Proposal for 3Dblog Technology </p><p> 3Dblog is the idea and te
39、chnology we have proposed, one that was born by</p><p> applying Web3D to blog technology. Put simply, 3Dblog is proposed as follows.</p><p> 3Dblog is a system that combines Web3D with the co
40、ncept and technology of blogs. It enables users to contribute their own Web3D works with a minimum of difficulty, and also modify and develop their works collaboratively and dynamically .</p><p> 2.2 Featur
41、es of 3Dblog Technology </p><p> 3Dblog technology has the following features.</p><p> – It makes it easy to produce, control, and manage homepages that deal with</p><p> Web3D w
42、orks.</p><p> – Many users can produce and use Web3D works easily and dynamically.</p><p> – The trackback function makes it simple for users to contributeWeb3D works</p><p> and
43、 also exchange opinions.</p><p> – 3Dblog provides simple developing tools for specific, applied fields. (VR education,display of houses, development of 3D characters, 3D block games,and so on.)</p>
44、<p> – As the system has library functions, it is easy for users to reuse past works</p><p> that they or others have produced.</p><p> 2.3 Registration of Web3D Components by Creators a
45、nd Advancement of Use of the Components in a Community</p><p> In our computer classes, in which we teach Web3D use, we have created and accumulated a large number of Web3D works and components. Although we
46、 once exhibited these works on an HTML-based home page, it was merely for reference and scarcely any students reused them; in fact, very few of the works have ever been reused. If we do attempt to reuse such data, howeve
47、r, there are many problems to solve. These include the center coordinates, scale values and directions of works, types of lights,backgrou</p><p> One advantageous method of solving these problems that hold
48、back the reuse</p><p> of earlier works is to employ the database of Web3D data. Specifically, users</p><p> register their Web3D works and components, to which data property information</p
49、><p> such as the file name, additional information, classification, and key words are added. Users can then search the desired data easily by enlisting powerful search functions such as SQL. In this way, it i
50、s possible to reactivate data of previous Web3D works . </p><p> 2.4 The 3Dblog System’s Structure </p><p> We commenced this research using Zope. While Zope is a reliable system, it</p>
51、<p> has a weak point with respect to graphic user interfaces (GUI); therefore, we</p><p> switched to Perl language. Though Perl is very convenient and makes it easy to</p><p> develo
52、p a 3Dblog environment, it also has a shortcoming in regard to GUI: it</p><p> cannot support a mouse. Because it is imperative to manipulate 3D objects in</p><p> 3Dblog, this weak point is f
53、atal. Currently, we are developing and researching</p><p> 3Dblog technology on the basis of Java and JSP.</p><p> Figure 1 represents the creation of a user’s 3Dblog page. At the beginning, i
54、t is necessary for user who wants to establish a 3Dblog site to set up fundamental</p><p> data such as the design, title, and administrator password. The 3Dblog generator</p><p> then produce
55、s a fundamental 3Dblog homepage.</p><p> Fig. 1. Creation of a user’s 3Dblog page</p><p> Figure 2 represents the block diagram of 3Dblog. First, users will enter the</p><p> top
56、 page of 3Dblog. Although the manager of this 3Dblog site would set the</p><p> style sheet data (CSS) when he or she generates this 3Dblog site, users can also</p><p> change the style sheet
57、data easily. In practice, the reference servlet is the main page of this site. The reference servlet dispatches the Reference & Contribution(JSP) program when user wants to refer or contribute some data. In this syst
58、em we will deal with Web3D data as 3D data. Users can produce 3D works with relevant applications and CAD, which we have prepared. They can then contribute their 3D work to the contribution servlet, after which the contr
59、ibution servlet dispatches the reference </p><p> Fig. 2. Block diagram of 3Dblog</p><p> Two primary features of 3Dblog are the trackback function and the RSS function. </p><p>
60、 The trackback function makes it easy to form communities: When we write someone’s news into our own blog page, a link is established from someone else’s blog page to our own. Technically speaking, our 3Dblog sends track
61、back ping data to another 3Dblog site, that site receives the trackback URL, and then the site adds the link automatically. RSS is also a new concept that enables our system to produce RDF data.</p><p> Fig
62、ure 3 shows the 3D-CAD we developed for 3Dblog. The kind of Blog</p><p> tool we are developing is for installation on a desktop PC. In the following,</p><p> we describe the language and the
63、developing environment used to develop the</p><p> 3Dblog system.</p><p> – Language: Java, JSP, Web3D </p><p> – Environment: Eclipse 3.1.1 </p><p> – Server softw

65、ning the features of 3Dblog is that anybody can</p><p> make a 3Dblog homepage and begin to administer it at once. All that is needed</p><p> is to set up simple, fundamental data. Therefore,

67、<p> To contribute Web3D works, creators must enter their own fundamentalinformation.</p><p> They then edit and contribute pages, and produce their own Web3D works. Since the system provides a list o
68、f Web3D works and a common space for all creators of this project, creators can not only contribute to and edit the components,but also remodel common Web3D work collaboratively. Naturally, IDs and passwords are need to
69、administer these components and common work .</p><p> 3 Applicable Fields for 3Dblog</p><p> Furthermore, we added information to the pavilions as hyperlinks. Figure 5</p><p> sh

73、ally produced a virtual system featuring the Pan-Pacific Exposition of 1937. In the PPE project, students could produce the relevant components and integrate them as a site very smoothly. It was proved that we could enjo
74、y the experience of interacting through this system. The result of our experiment clearly shows that this system is very useful for produce Web3D works collaboratively. In the future, we intend to improve</p><
