4、 public health issue. One population that has a riskfor mental health issues is college students. Little is known about perceptions of mental illness and mental healthservices among college students in Vietnam. The purpo
5、se of this study is to describe perceptions of mental illnessand mental health services among college students in Vietnam, and to compare them with those in the UnitedStates (US). The cross-sectional data were collected
6、using a self-administered survey from January to March in2018 at a national university in Vietnam, and a state university in the US. The study revealed differences inperceptions of causes of mental health between Vietnam
7、ese and US participants. Vietnamese participants tendedto believe that individuals with mental illness were dangerous and need to be kept out from the community,while US participants perceived that mental illnesses are t
8、he same as other illnesses. An important indicator ofVietnamese perceptions of mental health was the low likelihood of seeking formal help because of preference forseeking help from family or friends for mental illness.
9、Interventions, such as mental health awareness campaignsor training courses should be provided for college students in Vietnam. Some strategies to improve mental healthamong college students used in the US may help to re
10、duce stigma toward mental illness in Vietnam.1. IntroductionThe global burden of mental health disorders is a significant publichealth issue (World Health Organizations, 2017). Mental health is oneof the most recent addi
11、tions to the United Nations Sustainable Devel-opment Goals, while historically the majority of the goals were forcommunicable diseases (World Health Organizations, 2018). One po-pulation that has a risk for mental health
12、 issues is college students(Balon et al., 2015; Bruffaerts et al., 2018). A previous study conductedin the United States (US) shows that mental health issues includinganxiety, depression, and relationship problems among
13、college studentsare increasing concerns (Mistler et al., 2012). Among college studentsin Singapore, the prevalence of social networking addiction, which isalso related to other sorts of addiction and affective disorder,
14、is high(Tang and Koh, 2017). A study on psychological distress among collegestudents in India suggests that psychological distress, which is asso-ciated with other negative outcomes (e.g. academic failures, substanceabus
15、e, suicidality), is common (Jaisoorya et al., 2017). Adolescents andyoung adults who reported self-injurious behaviors were more likely tohave suicidal intent in India (Bhola et al., 2017). Social phobia is also aproblem
16、 among university students in India (Joseph et al., 2018).Vietnam is a country that does not have much research on mentalhealth, since its main public health focuses are still on infectious dis-eases (US Agency for Inter
17、national Development, 2018). The highburden of mental illness and a lack of mental health legislation andresources are problems in Vietnam (Vuong et al., 2011). A householdstudy conducted in Vietnam found that the issues
18、 stem from a lack ofknowledge about mental illness, and the preference of combiningmedical treatment and family care to cure mental illness (van der Hamet al., 2011). A study conducted in Southeast Asian countries, inclu
19、dingVietnam, suggested that suicidal ideation rates among college studentswere 11.7%, while similar rates for this age group in the U.S. were at8.8% (Peltzer et al., 2017). Yet, little is known about perceptions ofmental
20、 illness and mental health services among college students inVietnam.The purpose of this study is to describe perceptions of mental illnessand mental health services among college students in Vietnam and tocompare them w

23、ed.Tparticipants (77.1%) while chemical imbalance was most commonamong US participants (42%).As for treatment options, there was also a significant difference bycountry, except regarding support from family and friends.
