2、ne and gain development. Originally, merchant hall was only a place for gathering for people living outside of their hometowns. It had little to do with business industry. After the middle of Ming Dynasty, with the devel

3、opment of the development of commodity economy and business metropolitans, many of the merchant halls with heavy tinge of commerce came into being. During the sovereign of Jiajing and Wanli, the merchant hall became pros

4、perous. It gradually evolved from a simple association of fellows into an organization of business. At the end of Ming period, merchant halls of business occupied a large proportion. However, most of them were based in c

5、ountryside because the majority of business associations at that time extended from the rural areas to urban areas. Therefore, merchant halls of business retained a tinge localism with most of them unchanged as associati

6、ons for fellowship of business people. Even in late Qing Dynasty, only few merchant halls were not regional associations. The merchant halls which got rid of regional restrictions appeared as trade association of the sam

7、e industry. This article mainly consists of three large parts: introduction, main body and conclusion. The introduction gives a brief picture of the current research on merchant halls existing in Hunan Province as well a

8、s pictured a blue print of the trend of relevant research. The main text includes three chapters. Chapter 1: The outlay and location of traditional merchant halls in Hunan Province. This chapter gives a depiction of the
