15、dtoaonewayclutchsothatitcanspinfreelyinonedirectionbutnotintheother.Eachofthethreeelementshasfinsmountedinthemtopreciselydirecttheflowofoilthroughtheconverter.Withtheenginerunningtransmissionfluidispulledintothepumpsecti
16、onispushedoutwardbycentrifugalfceuntilitreachestheturbinesectionwhichstarsitrunning.Thefluidcontinuesinacircularmotionbacktowardsthecenteroftheturbinewhereitentersthestat.Iftheturbineismovingconsiderablyslowerthanthepump
17、thefluidwillmakecontactwiththefrontofthestatfinswhichpushthestatintotheonewayclutchpreventitfromturning.Withthestatstoppedthefluidisdirectedbythestatfinstoreenterthepumpata“help”angleprovidingatqueincrease.Asthespeedofth
18、eturbinecatchesupwiththepumpthefluidstartshittingthestatbladesonthebacksidecausingthestattoturninthesamedirectionasthepumpturbine.Asthespeedincreaseallthreeelementsbegintoturnatapproximatelythesamespeed.Sinethe‘80sindert
19、oimprovefueleconomytqueconvertershavebeenequippedwithalockupclutchwhichlockstheturbinetothepumpasthevehiclereachesapproximately4050mph.Thislockupiscontrolledbycomputerusuallywon’tengageunlessthetransmissionisin3rd4thgear
